Wireless Distribution System, abbreviated WDS, is a method of linking two or
more Wireless Access Points or Wireless Routers together without having to
install network cable runs (CAT5 cable). This can be a great way to link
different areas of a yacht with multiple access points together and allow
sharing the Internet all around the vessel without having to take the boat
apart and run cables.
Not all Wireless Access Points or Wireless Routers come with this capability so
make sure you check the package or product information if you need to use this.
If at all possible use the same manufacturer and model equipment that
are known to work together using WDS because sometimes using mixed equipment
will not work.
WDS links two stations together wirelessly and is sometimes referred to as a
"Repeater Mode". The configuration is usually in an "Advanced" part of the
Wireless configuration section. The two (or more) stations usually have to be
configured with the MAC (Media Access Control) Address of the other stations
that it will link with. All of the stations also must be on the same channel
and must use the same Encryption (WEP or WPA). Often only WEP is supported
when WDS is used. You can use different network names on the stations if you
like to describe the different area where the station is located. Examples:
salon, master-sr, wheel-house, crew-mess.
Some manufacturers now have WDS included in the stock firmware. For other
manufacturers wireless products you have to load an after-marked firmware
that has the WDS capability.
